Abstract
Chronic wound management is a challenging field for many surgeons, for its tendency to recur and difficulty for a ""perfect cure"". There have been many attempts to manage chronic wounds via various methods, including surgical, biological, or chemical managements. Surgical debridement is an easy and quick method, but unnecessarily removes clean uncontaminated tissue and requires at least local anesthesia. We present a successful case of ultrasonic debridement using a portable device for a simple method of ""painless debridement"". A 78 year-old women visited our reconstruction center with a pressure sore on her sacral area. We used the Ul-tech Smart Wound Care System (ULSC-12D) for debridement of the chronic wound. Follow-up visits were made on post-op day 3, 7, and 14. With this portable device using low-frequency (25 kHz) ultrasound, we successfully completed the procedure, and observed the gradual change of the wound. Foul odor and purulent discharge were significantly reduced by day 14, and the patient did not suffer from severe pain or excessive bleeding. From this case, we propose a useful, simple and easy way for the debridement of a chronic wound.
